Bernard Wee is head of the International and Financial Markets Development departments for the Monetary Authority of Singapore. The Financial Markets Development Department aims to promote a vibrant financial market in Singapore, with a focus on developing capital market products and solutions, growing the asset management and insurance sectors, and fostering sound and innovative technology, payments and exchange infrastructure. The International Department oversees MAS’ international and regional cooperation. Prior to heading these departments, Mr. Wee was head of the MAS Monetary Management Division. Mr. Wee is a graduate of Columbia University where he earned a BA in Political Science and a Master’s degree in Public Administration.

One-on-One Interview: Ng Kok Song

Ng Kok Song is Chair of GIC Global Investments and a member of its International Advisory Board. He pioneered the establishment of the Singapore International Monetary Exchange, the first financial futures exchange in Asia and became its first chairman from 1984 to 1987. Together with CME chairman Leo Melamed, Ng created the mutual offset arrangement between the two exchanges in 1984, one of the earliest and most successful exchange linkages in the history of the derivatives industry. It was also under Ng’s leadership that SIMEX launched its Nikkei 225 futures contract – the world’s first Nikkei futures contract and still the flagship futures contract in the exchange’s comprehensive suite of Asian derivatives product offerings.

Mark Wetjen has served as a CFTC Commissioner since October 2011. Upon the departure of Chairman Gary Gensler in late 2013, Commissioner Wetjen was elected to serve as the acting chairman. Mr. Wetjen served in that role for approximately five months, managing daily operations and setting overall policy direction of the agency. During his chairmanship, Mr. Wetjen oversaw implementation of the first trading mandate for certain interest rate and credit default swaps. He is also a sponsor of the CFTC’s Global Markets Advisory Committee. Prior to joining the CFTC, Mr. Wetjen worked for seven years in the U.S. Senate as a senior leadership staffer and was a lawyer in private practice. Mr. Wetjen received a bachelor’s degree from Creighton University and a law degree from the University of Iowa College of Law.
